Um.... That's hard on a control freak mama like me. Seriously. But, I didn't want to crush his spirit, so I told him he could as long as I handled anything on the stove/oven. He agreed! So this was his big dinner creation (to which I still had to add a salad, lol - he just doesn't understand a well-balanced meal at 5 years old! :)
My 5 year old was beaming with excitement and he told everyone for three days how he made a whole dinner all by himself (and I learned that sometimes it's worth it not to have a fancy schmancy meal every night - if you kid wants to make dinner, just let them! :)
He had less interest in washing the dishes though afterwards, imagine that! But from now on we've adopted a "Kid Chef Night" once a month - where the kiddos get to make/create a family meal. I can't wait to see what else they try to make on their own (and this will be a good test for me to smile through a meal that I may otherwise not enjoy, lol - but I put my husband through that when I first learned to cook - ask him about the partially frozen tilapia he still ate one time just so I wouldn't know how bad of a chef I was in my early years... That one really stuck with him! :) But the joy and sense of accomplishment these kiddos feel when they're done - it may be (maybe!) worth risking foodborne illness. :)
